In November 1948, the C-121A Lockheed Constellation that would become “Columbine II” was delivered to the Air Force Military Air Transport Service. Its Lockheed construction number was 2602. The plane was then operated between McArthur Field, NY and Kaflavik, Iceland until November 1949. The C-121A Columbine II was then flown to Burbank, CA where the plane was converted to a VIP configuration and designated as a VC-121A. The airplane then was based at Washington National Airport from February 1950 to November 1952 and used by the Secretary of the Air Force.
