The P-51's maiden flight was on October 26, 1940 and was introduced in 1942. In 1943-44, P-51s became available to the 8th and 9th Air Forces. The P-51 proved to be a perfect for the task of escorting bombers all the way to the deepest targets. Later in 1944, P-51s were deployed in the Far East for close support and escort missions and it operated in the Tactical Photo Reconnaissance role. P-51 Mustang remained in service with more than 30 air forces after the war.
