The P-51D variant of the Mustang introduced the distinctive bubble-top canopy and more powerful engines which increased its payload and range, it was the most widely produced variant and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and recognizable aircraft of all time. Some were used relatively successfully as a ground-attack fighter leading up to and after D-Day but with liquid-cooled engines were more vulnerable to ground fire than P-47s. The P-51D was virtually identical with P-51K version. During the Korean War, the F-51 Mustang was used primarily for close support of ground forces. It was better suited to the small airstrips of Korea. The aircraft were based at Kimpo, Pusan and Pohang, flying out of one field then another in close support operations against the advancing North Koreans since the jet aircraft of the day did not have enough range to permit sufficient loiter time over the target. They were withdrawn from combat in 1953. A total of 8,156 P-51D were built: 6,502 at Inglewood, 1,454 at Dallas and 200 by CAC at Fisherman's Bend, Australia.
