The MD-11 program was launched on December 30, 1986 with commitments for 52 orders, though there were orders cancelled by Dragonair, Scandinavian and UTA in 1988. The MD-11 was produced in Long Beach, California, at the Douglas Products Division of the Boeing Commercial Airplanes until February 2001. Its maiden flight was on January 10, 1990. The first MD-11 was delivered to Finair on December 1990 and it was put into service that same year by Delta Airlines.
