The Stratotanker first flew on August 17, 1956. It is characterized by four turbofans mounted under 35 degree swept wings, a horizontal stabilizer mounted on the fuselage and a hi-frequency radio antenna protruding forward from the top of the vertical stabilizer. Depending on fuel storage configuration, the aircraft can carry up to 83,000 pounds of cargo. The KC-135R is a re-engined version that can offload 50 percent more fuel, is 25 percent more fuel efficient, costs 25 percent less to operate and is 96 percent quieter than the original variant. The last KC-135 was delivered to the USAF in 1965.
