The maiden flight of the F7U took place from Naval Air Station Patuxent River on September 29, 1948. The F7U was nicknamed "Gutless Cutlass" in reference to its lack of engine thrust and consequently, its carrier landing and take-off was notoriously poor. The Cutlass suffered many technical and handling problems throughout its short service career. There were over one quarter of all Cutlasses built were destroyed in accidents. There are 320 F7U Cutlasses built.
